A new school year comes with exciting events, and of course, a brand new school musical – or in this case, two musicals)!
On August 23rd and 24th, auditions for the lead roles of ‘Superman’ were held at the auditorium with the presence of Music teacher Ms. Druitt. Attendees were asked to sing a song of their choice and read some lines from the script to test their acting abilities. The talented students all did extremely well and completed their auditions with great confidence.
The first three to step on stage were Grade 7 student Toby Norton, Grade 9 student Antoinette Spicer and her sister, Grade 10 student Catherine Spicer who auditioned for the roles of Bobby (Superman–male lead), Kate (Linda–female lead) and Olga (Superman’s rival). They gave a wonderful performance with the reading of the scenes, and Catherine’s attempt at a German accent was particularly impressive.
Once they were done showcasing their talent, it was Isabelle and Svea’s turn, both of whom are Grade 7 students. The two girls timidly walked up and were originally quite bashful. However, as they began to sing, they clearly grew much more comfortable. Ms. Druitt even asked Toby to join them, who impressed everyone with his amazing singing voice and evident stage charisma!
Apart from the ‘Superman’ musical, UNIS is also very fortunate to be expecting our first student-led production ‘Hercules’ this year! As auditions were held last year and most of the roles have now been filled, the group of leading seniors and the recruited cast are already organizing after-school practices. It has been revealed that the two leading spots were given to Grade 12 students Danny Park, who will be playing the almighty Hercules and Ruby Davies, who is going to play his headstrong and witty love interest Megara.
With these two promising musicals running alongside one another, this school year is surely going be fantastic and filled with exciting drama!
