There is a wide variety of Community Service groups at UNIS. One of those involved is a group named One Thousand Paper Cranes, which is Ngan Hac Giay in Vietnamese.
One Thousand Paper Cranes (also called as OTPC) helps people in poor rural areas of Vietnam. Group members collect clothes, food, toys, blankets and many more. These donations are sent to OTPC every one to two months. OTPC’s main aim is to help the main Ngan Hac Giay group with financial support with several Pizza sales, Bake sales, Spring Fair, Bazaars etc. , mostly to build schools on Northern Vietnam, and for scholarship support for poor students.
UNIS students can also join in trips to places where OTPC gives out help. Last year, the group visited the Lang Son Orphanage for 2 nights and 3 days, to celebrate Moon Festival with the children. They made masks, moon cakes and colorful lights and also made sure the children had fun by preparing games, activities, and also just talking to them.
UNIS students involved with the group hope that the children had a very memorable moon festival. Recently, the group went on another trip for a day, to a Blind School in Hai Phong. This was joined by RMIT students too. Students all sang and gave them presents like boxes of sweets. The children also sang for the UNIS students in return, which was incredibly good. OTPC students talked to the children, and found about their dreams, like becoming a poet. Everyone felt happy because they feel that they gave more happiness and hope for them.
