R.I.P.D. also known as the Rest in Peace Department is an action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Bacon. Though it is a highly anticipated summer movie I personally found it less entertaining than I initially hoped for.
A recently slain cop called Nick (Ryan Reynolds) is thrown headfirst into the world of demons and the undead where he is given a job in the R.I.P.D., a new identity and a partner named Roy (Jeff Bridges).
Nick, who is the main character, spends the movie trying to find the man who killed him, and in the meantime, tries to save the world. The movie itself felt tacky and it barely fit into the comedy category. Most of the funniest scenes were all put into the official trailer to attract attention; there was barely any other comedy material outside of the trailer. Furthermore, it was simply not original. It seemed like a bad combination of Men in Black and Ghostbusters; both of which are great movies which shouldn’t be repeated.
Though the trailer and advertisements for the movie created a buzz for it, not only were the graphics and CGI not well done, but the plot was extremely predictable and not very well thought out. It seemed like the storyline followed one of Cartoon Network’s ‘Adventure Time’ episodes.
I recommend this movie to those who enjoyed movies such as: Mall Cop, Cop Out, and The Other Guys. However, I would also advise those who are waiting to see R.I.P.D. not to expect any Oscars from it.
