Gangnam Style takes UNIS and the world by storm
Do you know the horse-riding dance? Have you heard of the line, “Dress classy, dance cheesy”? Then you must have heard of Gangnam Style.
This song has gone completely viral. With over 450 million views on Youtube plus its catchy melody and even catchier dance, the language barrier is no problem to the thousands of fans of this song.
PSY, the man who wrote this addictive song, is a South Korean singer and songwriter under YG Entertainment, a popular record label based in Seoul. Though he has been in the industry for quite a while, Gangnam Style has opened the doors of “K-Pop” (Korean Pop) to the world. PSY has appeared on numerous American TV shows and the video is now the most liked video ever on Youtube.
Ewa Lachman, a 9th grade student who is quite familiar with this genre of music, said, “The music video is very different and free, it is entertaining which makes it funny. It’s very amusing to watch and listen to.”
Ji Hoon Lee, an 11th grade student, thinks Gangnam Style became popular because, “the choreography is very easy to learn, the music video is extremely funny and the lyrics and melody are very addictive”.
Our school has also shown a large interest in this song. The middle school used this song in their Flashmob and before the morning announcement meetings in the theatre; Gangnam Style was played through the speakers. Students sing it around at school and even teachers, such as Mr. Powers, do the dance and mention the song once in a while in their classes.
“The lyrics and dances are really fun and the song is easily stuck in your mind, like for example the chorus.” Says Kate Tang, a 10th grade student who is a fan of this song, when asked why she likes it.
As it can be seen, Gangnam Style has grabbed the attention of everybody. Fans are already looking forward to the next humorous song and video PSY will release while discovering all of his old songs that have already came out. Our school is waiting for the next “it” song that can be used around campus. Who knows, maybe it will be Vietnamese?
