In the past few weeks Grade 10 students have been viewing the documentary ‘Home‘ directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a French journalist, in 2009. The documentary consists of stunning aerial film and statistics about our changing earth and it reveals the great adventure and balance that we as humans find on our planet.
The main focus of the film is the depletion of resources, including fossil fuels, and how the amazing Earth bequeathed to us is being destroyed. Students discovered that the Earth has been conquered and explored by human kind like no other species previously.
A more controversial issue however, with this film was the cost entailed in making it, around 12 million USD. Surely this is wasting more of the planet’s resources? “I think that it was money well spent since now people are aware of the damage to the environment” said Cian Hamer (Grade 10), putting the benefits of the film before the costs endured. Josiah Bloemberg said “I think it really opened my eyes” and Emma Simson said “I now have a new perspective on the world” (both Grade 10 students).
The film can be found on YouTube and has no copyright meaning that it can be reproduced worldwide for free to spread the message of environmental awareness as far as possible. The film was released simultaneously across 5 different continents in 14 different languages which is extremely unusual for a film of this type. Online, this documentary has received positive feedback: “This movie has really changed my view on the world.” (by YouTube name ColRon).
Undoubtedly breathtaking, this film is perfect for those interested in learning more about how our society impacts our planet.
