The Mysterious Benedict Society, a book series by Trenton Lee Stewart published on 2007, is a story of the adventures of four orphans coming together to save the world.
In a small town called Stonetown, four orphans named Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance take a written test for gifted children. They all passed the truly hard test. They are then introduced to Mr. Benedict, who is the man behind the tests. Mr. Benedict needs a group of young children to be spies at the school called the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened (L.I.V.E).
Being “pretend” students at an institute is hard under the eye of Mr. Curtain, the person Mr. Benedict is sure is up to no good. Mr. Curtain has a plan to brainwash people with an ingenious machine called The Whisperer.
Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance face challenges, eavesdrop, spy, and search for clues about Mr. Curtain’s plan in unimaginable places, and they make up a plan to stop him. The four children become close to each other.
What will happen with their plan? Will the 4 children stay together? Or get separated? Will they be able to find a family? Who knows! Better read and find out!
What’s to like about this book?
I recommend this book to all mystery lovers. If you already love books like The Mysterious 5, then you will really love The Mysterious Benedict Society.
All the main characters in the book are unique in their own way:
- 11 year old Reynie Muldoon, is talented at solving problems, logical deduction and reading other people’s emotions.
- 11 year old George “Sticky” Washington, has a gift wherein anything he reads just “sticks” in his brain. While he can write in many languages he cannot speak in most of them.
- 12 year old Kate Wetherall is a fearless girl with a lot of good ideas
- 2-3 year old Constance Contraire is good at poetry and can figure out the weather
