Habitats for Humanities Organizing Head Shaving Event

The Habitat for Humanity service group is having a head-shaving charity event soon. The Flame interviewed student Seung Yoo Yang for more details about the event.

Why are you doing head shaving?

Throughout the past few weeks, HFH has been trying to think of many different ideas for a fundraising event. But then we found out that the “head-shaving” and the “leg-waxing” were done by the past HFH group and so we decided to kind of make this into the HFH’s Tradition in order to raise as much money as possible to go and build another house for the local people in Vietnam.

What are you going to do with the money raised?

As I mentioned before, our target, in general, is the people around Vietnam who currently do not have solid houses to live in, or were affected by accidents. Our specific targets are set when a request has been put up on the organization itself, and the organization offers us the task. Earlier this year, we went to the Thai Binh Province, Vietnam to fix some houses. It is merely possible for us to go on to another trip this year so we are raising money for the group next year. We really thought the experiences were valuable and would want the next year’s group to experience it too.

Ironically, in order for us to build, we have to pay for the work orders and the materials put into building the houses. Therefore, we need to gain sufficient money from the fundraisers and our personal funds (which we are trying really hard to reduce) to fill up the amount to go to a build.

When is it going to be?

It has not been decided but we might start the event after the Lunar New Year Break. Itwill be a long term event since it is done from a voting system.

Are there a lot of people doing the shaving?

Currently, there are: Jemima Brennen, Louisa Hess, Maryam Mustafa, Sariek Cohen, Yanik Nyberg, Cian Hamer, Sidney Hong, Darikha Senanayake, Veronica Lai and James Carpy.

It would be really helpful if many people sign up, because that means more fundraising and more house being built for the poor people.

Who is going to be the barber?

Someone in our group volunteered to be the barber but we decided to just hire professional ones because we thought it would be risky to have an amateur barber.

How much money are you aiming to raise?

We actually do not have a specific aim. But since we won’t be able to use the money this year, we are trying to leave as much as we can for the group next year.
